Primary Care Projects

SYB ICS Health and Wellbeing team aim to be inclusive in all that we do. One of our key targets over the last year has been to ensure we create good relationships with primary care and expand our health and wellbeing support to colleagues working within general practice, community pharmacy, dental and optometry (eye health) services.

Primary care services provide the first point of contact in the healthcare system, acting as the 'front door' of the NHS and they coordinate other specialist care that the patient may need. Colleagues in primary care are sometimes subject to disruptive behaviour from patients who are feeling distressed at the nature of the healthcare system.

SYB ICS Health and Wellbeing team were keen to ensure colleagues within primary care felt supported in their role and so we have worked on various projects, training courses and events to demonstrate this.

General Practice (GP)

Calm Room project

What is a Calm Room?

In September 2021, the Health and Wellbeing team launched an application process for Practice Managers to bid for funding to create Calm Rooms within their practice. We launched this at the Practice Managers conference, where we were joined by over 100 colleagues from General Practice. We received some really positive feedback about this initiative and decided to extend the application process for more colleagues to get involved.

We are delighted to share that we have now funded a total of 40 Calm Rooms in practices across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

Each practice received a Calm Room pack which included: health and wellbeing support resources for colleagues, door signs and a comments book.

Practice Managers are now in their final stages of design and creation. Below you can see examples of the amazing work completed so far.

Health and wellbeing projects

From speaking to Practice Managers, we found that a lot of GP Surgeries did not have space to transform into a Calm Area, but still wanted to help improve the health and wellbeing of their staff. We created a new general project, where PMs were able to bid for funds to support colleagues in other innovtative ways. Some of the projects we have funded are:

- Supporting the Deepend Network, a collection of GP practices serving the most deprived communities in our region

- Yoga and relaxation therapies

- Improving staff rooms

Zero Tolerance training

Since August 2021, we have hosted many virtual Zero Tolerance training sessions for individual colleagues and full practice teams.

These intensive half-day sessions are designed to support frontline healthcare colleagues involved in any aspect of patient manegement to acquire the necessary conflict resolution skills required to safely manage patient aggresive behaviour in the workplace.

The session includes:

- Context, cause and communication of 'aggressive behaviour;

- Preparation and observation skills

- De-escelation and conflict resolution

- Building personal resilience

All delegates will receive a resource booklet after the session which will enhance their understanding and take their learning into their daily job.

You can check out our booking hub for the dates of the next training sessions, or you can email rdash.sybhwb@nhs.net if you would like to organise a full practice session.

Practice Manager ConferenceConference.jpg

In September 2021, we were invited to and sponsored the 3rd South Yorkshire Practice Managers Conference at Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria Hotel in Sheffield. We shared the day with approximately 100 Practice Managers from across South Yorkshire. We heard colleagues discuss the current issues that they are experiencing in primary care and what their health and wellbeing needs were. We were able to network with colleagues in primary care and present our health and wellbeing support offer; we also offered flyers and wallet-sized cards for Practice Managers to take back to their practice to place on noticeboards and staff areas. At the end of our presentation, we launched our Calm Room project. The final session of the day was a wellbeing and mindfulness exercise by Resilient Practice who we have continued to work with since the conference.

We cannot wait to go back in 2022!

Optometry

Virtual health and wellbeing event

Working alongside Nizz Sabir and the LOCs in our region, we hosted a CPD accredited virtual event 'Transform Your Mind & Life' for all colleagues working in the optical sector, inclusive of all roles. Inspiring Success delivered this session on the evening of Tuesday 1st February 2022, in which we had over 50 colleagues attend! Sheena Shah, from Inspiring Success, is also an Optometrist by profession so it was great for colleagues to share experiences. Those who attended were the first to hear about our 'EYES ON YOU' event in the Spring. Some of the feedback we received via the Zoom chat is as follows:

  • "Excellent got lots of tips and plans of action"
  • "I have found the session interesting, and will try some of the ideas discussed"
  • "Some good tips from my breakout group, thanks guys will certainly try some out"
  • "Wasn't really looking forward to tonight, but time has gone quickly and feel it has been really helpful. Thanks"
  • "Thanks very much. Lovely to chat to other Optoms."

Dentistry

Virtual health and wellbeing event

Similar to the virtual event for Optical colleages, we hosted a virtual event of 'Transform Your Mind & Life' for all colleagues working within the dental sector. Again, we invited Inspiring Success to deliver an introduction to improving your health and wellbeing in January 2022. We were delighted to welcome approximately 40 colleagues. Those who attended were the first to be informed of the musculo-skeletal support programme once launched. Some of the feedback we received via the Zoom chat is as follows:

  • "Great course, I'm feeling better already"
  • "Thank you!!! Really enjoyed that- feel content now"
  • "Thank you to you all. Great talk, Sheena, thank you."

Musculo-skeletal treatment programme

SYB ICS Health and Wellbeing team are always keen to engage with local committees to find out what the needs are of colleagues working in primary care. We have a good relationship with the chairs of the LDCs, who informed us they have received feedback from dental colleagues that they are suffering with back, neck and shoulder pain from leaning over patients throughout the working day.

From this, we were delighted to plan and launch a musculo-skeletal support programme for those working in the dental sector in SYB. In collaboration with The White House Clinic and The Rotherham Physiotherapy Centre, colleagues are entitled to a maximum of 2 x 30 minute soft tissue release massage treatments on a first come, first served basis. This is funded by SYB ICS and was launched at the beginning of March 2022.

We have already received fantastic feedback from our dental colleagues that it has improved their physical wellbeing and some even said they are highly likely to continue funding their own treatments in future.
